Meta opens Ray-Ban AI Glasses to third-party developers

Meta has announced that it is opening its Ray-Ban Display AI glasses to third-party developers, allowing external apps and games to run on the device’s heads-up display. This move shifts the glasses from a closed AI assistant system to a more open spatial computing platform.

The company is offering developers two main ways to build apps: mobile apps and web apps. Both options are currently in developer preview.

For mobile development, Meta has introduced the Wearables Device Access Toolkit. This is a native SDK for iOS and Android that allows developers to extend their existing apps to the glasses display. It supports programming languages like Swift and Kotlin and lets developers add features such as text, images, lists, buttons, and video playback.

For those who prefer web-based development, Meta is also supporting apps built with standard technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This makes it easier to create standalone experiences for the glasses.

Meta says developers are already experimenting with hands-free features using the device’s camera, voice, and audio systems. Now, with visual display support, apps can show information directly in front of the user in real time.

Developers will be able to build a wide range of tools, including live score updates, information overlays, utility apps, and other real-time services. According to Meta, the new toolkit offers deep hardware integration that is not commonly available in other AI glasses platforms.

The rollout of these features will continue over the coming weeks.

Meta also shared that users interact more with visual AI responses compared to voice-only answers. The company says the display helps users frame photos and videos more easily using a built-in viewfinder.

This update is part of Meta’s broader push toward more interactive smart glasses, including features like virtual handwriting input using a Neural Band controller for gesture control.
