Google Gemini Update Adds Gmail Integration to Drive Search

Google is strengthening its artificial intelligence tools by expanding the capabilities of Gemini within Google Workspace. The latest update allows users to include Gmail conversations directly in Ask Gemini in Google Drive, making the system more connected and context-aware.

With this change, Gemini is no longer limited to analyzing files stored in Drive. Instead, it now works as a broader assistant that can understand information across different Google apps.

Earlier, Ask Gemini in Google Drive could only summarize documents, extract key points, and organize files. Now, it can also use Gmail conversations to provide more complete answers.

According to Engadget, users can ask Gemini to summarize long email threads, highlight important decisions, and connect related information between emails and Drive documents. This helps users manage work more efficiently without switching between multiple apps.

Google says the goal of this update is to give users a “complete view of business context.” For example, a project manager can ask Gemini to summarize emails, find related files, and identify action points in one request.

The company also sees this move as part of a wider trend in AI development, where digital tools are being combined to create more unified workflows. This puts Google in direct competition with Microsoft Copilot in the productivity AI space.

However, concerns about privacy remain. According to Digital Trends, Google stated that Gemini only accesses Gmail content when users specifically include it in their queries.

To ensure security, the feature must be enabled by Workspace administrators, and users must also turn on smart features before using cross-app functions.

The rollout began on June 3, 2026, and will take place gradually over 15 days. The feature is available for various Google Workspace plans, including Business, Enterprise, Education editions, and Google AI subscriptions.
