Apple iPhone 17 May Arrive without SIM Card Slot

03 September, 2025 12:40

Apple is reportedly preparing to remove the physical SIM card slot from its upcoming iPhone 17 series in the European Union, signaling the company’s push toward a fully eSIM-based future.

From the U.S. to Europe: Apple’s eSIM Expansion

The move wouldn’t be unprecedented. Apple first introduced eSIM-only iPhones in the U.S. with the iPhone 14 back in 2022. Those devices eliminated the need for a physical SIM tray, allowing users to activate their carriers digitally. The design change not only streamlined the iPhone’s build but also improved water resistance and security.

Now, according to reports citing industry insiders, Apple Authorized Reseller employees across the EU have been asked to complete eSIM training by September 5. The deadline is significant, as it comes just before Apple’s expected iPhone 17 launch event on September 9, 2025.

Training Hints at Wider Rollout

The eSIM-related training materials are reportedly available in Apple’s internal SEED app, which is used worldwide by Apple Stores and resellers. This suggests that the eSIM-only approach may soon expand beyond the U.S., potentially rolling out across Europe and other global markets.

However, industry watchers note that China may remain an exception, as eSIM adoption in the region is still limited due to regulatory and carrier restrictions.

iPhone 17 Air and Ultra-Slim Design

Rumors also point to the launch of the iPhone 17 Air, an ultra-slim model designed to emphasize minimalism. The removal of the SIM tray would fit Apple’s long-standing trend of phasing out physical features—from the headphone jack to the home button—in pursuit of cleaner design and futuristic functionality.

If the reports are accurate, the entire iPhone 17 lineup in Europe could arrive without SIM slots, marking a historic shift in how iPhones connect to networks.

Why Apple Is Moving to eSIM

  • Simplified activation: eSIMs allow users to switch carriers digitally without needing to insert a physical card.

  • Space-saving design: Removing the SIM tray frees up valuable internal space for slimmer builds and larger batteries.

  • Security benefits: eSIMs reduce risks of SIM theft or swapping scams.

  • Future-proofing: As global carriers increasingly support eSIM, physical SIM cards may become obsolete.
