Apple Responds to iPhone 17 Pro ‘Scratchgate’ Controversy

27 September, 2025 12:50

Apple has finally addressed the growing online debate around the so-called “scratchgate” issue affecting its new iPhone 17 Pro. Photos of demo units with visible blemishes around the MagSafe charging ring had flooded social media soon after the device’s release, raising fears about durability.

Apple’s Official Explanation

Apple told 9to5Mac that the marks seen on iPhone 17 Pro units in stores are not scratches but residue from worn-out MagSafe chargers. According to the company, damaged charging stands in Apple Stores have been transferring material onto the phones, making them look scratched. Apple claims these blemishes can usually be wiped away and that faulty charging stands are now being replaced.

Concerns About Camera Durability

The controversy grew after YouTuber JerryRigEverything suggested that the raised camera plateau on the iPhone 17 Pro might be more prone to scratches. Apple defended the design, saying the anodized finish used is the same as in previous iPhones and MacBook Pros. While tested for durability, Apple admitted the surface can still show normal wear over time.

Mixed Reactions From Reviewers

TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff praised the iPhone 17 Pro’s scratch-resistant back panel, calling it one of the most durable iPhones yet. However, a Cult of Mac reporter said the blemishes on a demo unit he inspected could not be wiped away and were “definitely scratches.”

Why Demo Units Look Worse

Apple added that display models in its stores are handled by thousands of people daily, making them more vulnerable to visible scuffs compared to devices used by individuals. This, according to Apple, explains why demo phones look worse than those purchased by customers.
