Social media platforms disrupted amid PTI’s virtual event
Internet monitor Netblocks confirmed a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
The Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) today has a scheduled virtual meeting for February 8 General Elections. In its second virtual gathering affected by internet blockages, the PTI said: “Shame on the caretakers that are causing damage to Pakistanis only. The virtual event would begin at 8pm.
A similar disruption occurred on December 17 , when PTI held a virtual power show, followed by January 7 , when PTI held a virtual fundraising telethon.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a statement refuting claims of a nationwide internet service disruption , adding that “Internet service is fully operational, and no cable has been affected anywhere in the country.”
Telecom operators also expressed concerns over frequent internet outages, citing potential political motivations behind the disruptions.
