Beware of Whiteflies, Punjab Agri Dept warned
Punjab Agriculture (Extension) Department warned vegetable growers for Whiteflies attacks on the crops.
The whiteflies attacks on vegetable fields. Hence, the farmers should take urgent steps to control it before its severity.
The Punjab Agriculture (Extension) deptarment spokesperson said that whitefly was a dangerous insect which remained active round the year. Its attack was witnessed at vegetable crops when cotton crops were not present in the fields.
Whiteflies took growth on the plants of maize, tobacco, fodder, cauliflower, radish, sweet potato, brinjal (eggplant), okra, melon, watermelon, chilli, spinach, gourd, tomato, onion, peas, potato, etc.
Whiteflies are a significant pest for cotton in Pakistan. They have 60 host plants and can transmit Whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses (WTGs) to around 23 vegetable, cereal, and ornamental crops.
Some say that increased humidity and inefficient pesticide application by farmers are the causes of the spread of whiteflies.
Therefore, the growers should conduct pest scouting of their crops twice a week so that its attack could be controlled before any damage to the crop.
