Iran refutes claims about involving assassination plots in US

07 August, 2024 20:01

TEHRAN: Iran has caegtorically denied any involvement with a Pakistani person who was allegedly detained in the US and accused of masterminding an abortive attempt to kill US lawmakers.

The comments were released in a statement by the permanent representation of the Islamic Republic to the UN on Wednesday, following reports by US media outlets of the “arrest” of the individual in question—named Asif Merchant.

According to the accounts, Asif Merchant merchant was detained last month and accused of paying alleged hitmen to carry out the scheme.

According to a purported FBI agent’s affidavit, which the sites have referenced, the agent had “current or former high-level officials like [former President Donald] Trump in mind.”

Reacting to the stories, however, the Iranian mission said, “We have not received any reports in connection with this issue from the US government.”

The mission also commented on allegations about the likelihood that the so-called plot was aimed at Trump, who ordered the assassination of Iran’s top anti-terror commander, General Qassem Soleimani, in Iraq in 2020.

“It is clear that this method contradicts the policy that is being led by the Iranian government towards legal prosecution of Martyr Soleimani’s murderer,” it said.

It is pertinent to mention here that on July 13, Trump survived an assassination attempt while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania.
