Elevator fire causes major evacuation at Eiffel Tower

24 December, 2024 21:08

On Tuesday, approximately 1,200 tourists were evacuated from the Eiffel Tower due to a fire that broke out in one of its elevator shafts between the first and second floors.

The fire, which began at around 10:30 am from an overheated elevator cable, was quickly contained, as reported by Euronews. During the firefighting efforts, access to the tower was restricted.

The Eiffel Tower, a global landmark, attracts between 15,000 and 25,000 visitors daily. The current incident is the second major fire in the tower’s history.

In January 1956, a fire in the TV control room caused substantial damage to the tower’s upper section, requiring a year-long repair and the addition of a new radio antenna.

This fire incident in Paris comes on the heels of the devastating 2019 blaze that nearly destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral. After five years of restoration, the iconic cathedral was reopened to the public earlier this month.
