14 April, 2024 09:50

The UN Security Council is all set to hold an emergency meeting today over Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attack on Israel, says the body’s president.

The UNSC meeting will be held at 4pm (8pm GMT) today at Israel’s request, a spokesperson for Malta told media.

Currently, Malta holds the rotating presidency of UNSC for this month.

In a letter to the Security Council president, Israel’s envoy to the UN termed the Iran’s air assault as flagrant violation of Israel’s sovereignty.

Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan wrote that today Iran has launched a direct attack from within its territory of over 200 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles towards Israel. He added that the attack was a dangerous and severe escalation.

Ambassador Erdan urged the UN Security Council to condemn Iran for these serious violations and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IGRC)  as a terrorist organisation.

Earlier, Iran in early hours of Sunday launched an air attack on Israel with over 200 drones and missiles, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed.

The IRGC said the action was taken under the operation “True Promise”, adding that the move was part of the punishment for “Israeli crimes”.

Sirens sounded in many places and blasts heard in the skies above Jerusalem early on Sunday, international media reported as Iran’s proxies and allies carried out coordinated attacks on Israeli positions.

Israel said the drones would take several hours before reaching its airspace.

The attack come nearly two weeks after Israel attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria leaving seven IRGC members dead.

“We launched an operation using drones and missiles in response to the Zionist entity’s crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Syria,” the IRGC said in a statement.

“The operation was carried out with dozens of missiles and drones to strike specific targets in the occupied territories.”
