Verdict against former President Musharraf challenged in Supreme Court Karachi registry today. Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi has challenged the death sentence to former president and former army chief General Pervez Musharraf (retired).

Furthermore, he has argued that the law relating to high treason doesn’t apply on Mr. Musharraf.

Because, he referred to the background of changes to the article 6 under 18th Constitutional Amendment.

Mehmood Akhtar stated that former president imposed emergency in 2007 while relevant law in current shape emerged in 2010 after 18th amendment.

Therefore, he said Musharraf had not violated the Constitution in 2007.

Moreover, he had cited that former military ruler had also legitimised his rule through referendum.

Verdict against former President

Special Court Islamabad has awarded death sentence to former President Pervez Musharraf in a high treason case.

A three member court headed by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth announced the verdict Tuesday.

The court had reserved judgment in the case on the 19th of last month.

The high treason trial of the former military dictator for imposing the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007, had been pending since December 2013.

Musharraf imposed a state of emergency. Besides, he also placed several key judges under house arrest in Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan.

Musharraf came to power after ousting then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 1999 bloodless coup.

However, the death sentence evoked an instant reaction from armed forces and the PTI government.

While the judgment caused pain and anguish to armed forces, Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan questioned the legality of the very verdict.

Special he asked why hastily pronouncing the judgment against  Pervez Musharraf in absentia.

While addressing a press conference in Islamabad late Tuesday night, Khan he discussed legal aspects.

Legally speaking, the high treason case against Musharraf was void from the beginning, he said, adding that a trial in absentia not a routine matter.

Meanwhile, ruling PTI also called core committee meeting to discuss the issue.
