Country to sizzle in heat during Eid holidays: PMD

29 March, 2025 18:42

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hot and dry weather conditions across most parts of the country during the Eid ul Fitr holidays, with temperatures expected to rise significantly and no immediate relief from rain.

Officials stated that continental air currents will dominate, leading to persistent dry spells in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other regions.

Plains areas are likely to experience intense heat during the holidays, with no rain-bearing systems anticipated to alleviate conditions. Islamabad is expected to remain hot and dry for at least the next 12 hours, while Balochistan’s districts will face similar weather. Punjab may see strong winds, and Sindh is predicted to stay dry with gusty conditions in some areas.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper districts could see partly cloudy skies, though Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are expected to remain dry. Temperatures are projected to climb sharply from April 4, potentially reaching 39°C in parts of the country.

Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Afzal warned of a significant temperature increase in the coming months, particularly in metropolitan areas like Karachi, where the urban heat island effect is likely to intensify drought conditions and daytime discomfort. He noted that most regions will experience temperatures 2°C to 3°C above normal, with Karachi’s daytime heat rising 3°C to 4°C higher than average.

The PMD advised citizens to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay indoors where possible, and remain hydrated. The department pledged to monitor the situation closely and issue updates as needed.

Authorities emphasized preparedness for extreme heat, particularly in urban centers, as Pakistan faces an extended dry spell with implications for public health and water resources.
