Islamabad hailstorm update: Will the govt pay for vehicle damage?

19 April, 2025 18:02

A parliamentary committee has urged the federal government and Islamabad administration to provide financial assistance to vehicle owners affected by the severe hailstorm that battered the capital last Wednesday.

Senator Faisal Saleem, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, has written to the Interior Ministry and Islamabad Chief Commissioner, proposing aid for citizens whose vehicles suffered extensive damage.

In his letter, Senator Saleem emphasized that such support would alleviate financial burdens on affected families and serve as a positive gesture from the government. He also called for a swift and transparent process to ensure timely insurance payouts for the victims.

While the government has not yet issued an official response, sources indicate that the Islamabad administration is actively reviewing the proposal. However, no concrete decision has been announced so far.

Last Wednesday’s freak hailstorm—which also hit parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—brought golf ball-sized hailstones, smashing car windscreens, damaging solar panels, and uprooting trees. The storm lasted 35 minutes, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
