PMD Warns of Heavy Rains Across Country Until May 4

30 April, 2025 12:02

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that rain is expected to begin across the country starting today. From April 30 to May 4, areas such as Islamabad, Murree, Galiyat, Upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are likely to experience showers. Some locations may also see heavy rainfall and isolated hailstorms during this period.

While the rain brings some relief to northern and central regions, intense heat continues to affect much of Sindh. Despite the heatwave, the PMD has predicted rainfall in parts of the province during the first week of May. From May 2 to May 5, southern Punjab and Balochistan are also expected to receive rain, including areas such as Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Tharparkar, Sanghar, and Umerkot.

Extreme temperatures were recorded across the country yesterday. Nawabshah registered the highest temperature at 49°C. Other scorching hotspots included Rahim Yar Khan, Khairpur, Padidan, Rohri, and Dadu, all hitting 48°C. Hyderabad and Bahawalpur reported 45°C, while Multan recorded 44°C. Peshawar and Muzaffarabad reached 41°C, Lahore 40°C, and Karachi 39°C. Islamabad saw a daytime high of 38°C, followed by Quetta at 37°C and Gilgit at 34°C.

Despite forecasts of rain, the heatwave is expected to persist in Sindh, particularly in Karachi and surrounding areas, where very hot and humid weather is likely to continue over the next few days. The PMD has also warned of strong winds in coastal regions. Afternoon temperatures in many parts of Sindh may remain above 40°C.

Health officials and the weather department have urged the public to take precautions during the extreme heat. People are advised to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak sun hours, and protect themselves from direct sunlight. Extra care should be taken for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.
