Karachi Faces Heatwave and Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Threat from May 24 to June 1

21 May, 2025 15:57

KARACHI – Tuesday, May 21, 2025: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned about a severe heatwave in Sindh, especially Karachi, starting from May 24 till June 1. A weather alert has also been issued for a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, which may turn into a cyclone in the next few days.

Cyclone ‘Shakti’ May Develop Soon

The PMD said a low-pressure area has formed near India’s west coast. It may become a deep depression or a cyclone by May 24 or 25. If it turns into a cyclone, it will be named “Shakti”. The name was suggested by Sri Lanka and means “power.”

Weather experts are closely watching this system. They say it is still too early to predict its path, but updates will come as the system develops.

Karachi to Face Intense Heat

During this time, sea breeze will stop in Karachi. This will push temperatures above 40°C. With high humidity, the “feels-like” temperature may be even higher.

The heat index will rise, causing serious discomfort, especially in coastal areas. People are advised to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid going out in the afternoon.

This comes at a time when Karachi is already dealing with load shedding. Experts say indoor temperatures can go higher than outside, which increases heat-related health risks.

Health and Safety Advice

  • Drink water regularly

  • Avoid outdoor work between 11 AM to 4 PM

  • Use wet towels or take frequent showers

  • Keep elderly and children safe

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol

Hospitals have also been alerted to prepare for possible cases of heatstroke or dehydration.
