Pakistan Braces for Heavy Rain and Urban Flooding Over Next 48 Hours

27 June, 2025 10:48

The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA has released an alert ahead of expected widespread monsoon rains in several parts of Pakistan from June 26 to June 28. These rains could cause urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and disruption of daily life.

Punjab and Islamabad on High Alert

According to the latest forecast, heavy rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms are likely in many parts of Punjab. Districts under alert include Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, and the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Major cities like Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi may face urban flooding, blocked roads, overflowing drains, and service disruptions.

Rain Emergency in Sindh

In Sindh, rain is expected to cause flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Jamshoro, Sujawal, and Shaheed Benazirabad. Other districts such as Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Tharparkar, and Badin may see moderate to heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of waterlogging, road closures, and damage to buildings.

Flash Flood Risk in KP

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rains may lead to flash floods and landslides in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Battagram. Mountain areas are particularly vulnerable.

AJK and Potohar Region

Regions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, and Hattian Bala, may also experience landslides and river overflows. The Potohar region is likely to face similar threats.

NDMA Urges Precaution

NEOC has directed provincial and district disaster management authorities to clear drains, issue public warnings, and station rescue teams in high-risk areas. People living in low-lying zones, near rivers, or slopes are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

Authorities recommend downloading the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app for real-time updates and alerts.
