Rainfall Alert: PMD Forecasts Widespread Showers, Thunderstorms Across Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast further rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning across Islamabad and several regions of the country.

According to the PMD, rain with strong winds and thunderstorms is expected in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad. Certain areas in Kashmir, northeastern Punjab, and the capital are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

In and around Islamabad, more rainfall with thunder and lightning is anticipated. Other areas with rain forecasts include:

  • Northern and Central Punjab: Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and Mandi Bahauddin.

  • Southern and Western Punjab: Okara, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Bahawalnagar, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Rain is also expected across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, Hangu, Kurram, Kohat, Waziristan, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, and Swabi.

In Balochistan, areas such as Barkhan, Kohlu, Musakhel, Dera Bugti, Loralai, and Zhob are also expected to receive rainfall. Rain is likely along Sindh’s coastal belt, including Karachi. Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir may experience rainfall with strong winds and thunderstorms as well.

The PMD has issued a warning of potential flash flooding in local and seasonal streams in various regions due to heavy to very heavy rainfall expected until July 10. The areas at risk include Murree, Galiyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, D.G. Khan, northeastern Punjab, Kashmir, and several parts of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Kohlu, Musakhel, Dera Bugti, Naseerabad, Sibi, Loralai, Zhob, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Awaran, Panjgur, and Turbat.

The department has also warned of possible landslides in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, and Kashmir, potentially disrupting transport.

Additionally, urban flooding is feared in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar due to heavy rainfall.

The public is advised to remain cautious and take all necessary safety measures during this period.
