Monsoon Death Toll Approaches 260 Nationwide as More Rainfall Expected Until July 26
ISLAMABAD: Heavy monsoon rains over the past 24 hours has claimed at least six lives and injured five others across Pakistan, bringing the death toll from the ongoing monsoon spell to 258, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported on Thursday.
According to the NDMA, three of the latest deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where five individuals were also injured. Two fatalities were reported in Islamabad, while one person lost their life in Sindh due to rain-related incidents.
Since the beginning of the monsoon season, the NDMA has recorded 258 deaths nationwide, with 616 people injured. Among the deceased are 89 men, 46 women, and 123 children. The injured include 243 men, 170 women, and 203 children, reflecting the widespread human impact of the severe weather.

In addition to the loss of life, the rains have caused significant damage to property and livestock. In the past 24 hours alone, 22 houses were destroyed and 36 animals died. Overall, the monsoon rains have demolished 1,027 houses and killed 364 livestock animals.

Punjab remains the worst-hit province with 139 deaths and 477 injuries, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 60 deaths and Sindh with 24. Other casualties include 16 in Balochistan, 6 in Islamabad, 5 in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 2 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The main causes of death are house collapses, flash floods, drowning, lightning strikes, electrocution, and landslides.
A tragic flash flood at Babusar Top swept away a family trying to rescue a three-year-old boy, Abdul Hadi, including Dr. Mishal, who died attempting to save the child.
The NDMA has conducted 148 rescue operations since June 26, saving 1,777 lives across the country. Punjab saw the highest number of rescues with 1,543 people saved in 128 operations, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to stay cautious during the monsoon season.
