The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert across Punjab as the fifth and most intense monsoon spell begins today, set to continue until July 31.
A PDMA spokesperson stated that monsoon rains will impact most districts of Punjab starting this evening, with continued rainfall expected through the end of the month.
Districts likely to receive heavy rainfall include Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujrat, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sargodha, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Multan.
PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathia warned that rainfall in the upper catchment areas could lead to a sharp increase in water levels in the Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers.
Currently, the Indus River at Taunsa is facing a medium-level flood, with a water flow of 410,000 cusecs. Low-level flooding is also occurring at the Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma sections of the Indus.
DG Kathia directed all deputy commissioners to remain present in their respective areas and to strictly implement Section 144 near rivers, streams, and nullahs to ensure public safety. He also ordered increased patrolling in flood-prone zones.
WASA, rescue teams, and district administrations have been instructed to stay alert and ensure quick water drainage from low-lying regions. All chokepoints are to be manned with adequate personnel and equipment, and disposal stations must operate continuously with backup generators on standby.
The DG further stressed that, under the Punjab Chief Minister’s instructions, private housing societies must eliminate water accumulation. Any failure in proper drainage will result in strict action.
Citizens are advised to contact PDMA’s emergency helpline at 1129 in case of urgent situations.
