Heavy Rains Lash Karachi as Black Clouds Cover City, More Downpours Expected

Heavy rains in Karachi wreak havoc as Lyari, Malir streams overflow
Thick black clouds blanketed the skies of Karachi on Thursday afternoon, bringing rainfall to several parts of the city. Showers were reported in Gulshan-e-Maymar, Orangi Town and nearby areas, while Surjani Town, New Karachi and North Karachi also experienced heavy rainfall, marking the third spell of rain in the past three days.
Torrential downpours were further recorded in Manghopir, the Northern Bypass and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. According to the Meteorological Department, “rain will lash Karachi today which will likely to commence after 12 pm in afternoon.” The department further predicted that rainfall could continue with intervals until nightfall.
Officials stated that the monsoon system will remain active across Sindh, including Karachi, until August 23, while another spell of heavy downpours is expected from August 27 and may last until August 30. “They added that after nearing the system final prediction can be given.”
On Wednesday, various areas of the city saw both light showers and heavy downpours, leading to water accumulation on major roads such as Drigh Road, Stadium Road, Mosamiyat, University Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal and FTC. Due to flooding, several underpasses have been closed, except Clifton underpass, while Korangi River and the EBM Causeway also remain shut.
