Glacier Burst in GB’s Ghizer Creates Artificial Lake, Villages Flooded

22 August, 2025 12:44

A glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district has caused massive flooding and destruction. The incident happened in the Tali Das area of Gupis, where the outburst created a large artificial lake.

According to government officials, several villages were submerged under floodwater. Many families have suffered financial losses. Luckily, no human deaths have been reported.

The Gilgit–Shandur Road is now completely blocked due to landslides. Raushan village has been cut off after heavy slides from two sides of the Tali Das stream.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ghizer confirmed that the Ghizer River was blocked by landslides at 3 am on Friday. This blockage has increased the water level, putting more villages in danger.

Local authorities gave timely warnings to residents. Because of this, many families managed to leave their homes safely. GB Home Minister Shams Lone said that although the damage is serious, lives have been saved.

Reports say some people are stranded in remote areas. A helicopter has been sent by the Force Command Northern Areas for emergency rescue. So far, more than 50 people have been rescued.

Government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq said that the glacier outburst is still blocking the river. The water is backing up and forming a huge lake. If the water level rises further, nearby settlements may go underwater. The Chief Minister of GB is personally monitoring the situation.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also warned of more rain. A fresh spell of rain with thunder and wind is expected from August 23 to 27 in Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rain is possible in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar.

The Met Office has also issued a warning about landslides and mudslides. Roads in hilly areas may remain blocked, and residents have been advised to stay alert.
