NDMA Issues Weather Advisory as Heavy Rain and Snowfall Expected Across Pakistan

14 December, 2025 12:48

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a weather advisory warning of possible disruptions due to rain and snowfall expected in several parts of Pakistan. The advisory remains in effect from today through December 14, as notable weather changes are anticipated across multiple regions of the country.

According to the NDMA, a westerly wind system is likely to enter northern and western Pakistan, bringing rainfall to low-lying areas and snowfall to mountainous regions. Areas expected to be affected include Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kohistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and parts of Balochistan.

The incoming weather system is also expected to intensify fog and smog conditions, particularly in the plains. Light to moderate rainfall is forecast for lowland areas, while higher elevations may experience snowfall. These conditions could disrupt travel and routine activities, especially in northern and western regions.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its daily forecast, predicting cold and partly cloudy weather across most parts of the country on Sunday. The PMD has also cautioned that extremely cold temperatures are likely in hilly areas, particularly during early morning and nighttime hours.

DETAILED FORECAST BY PMD

In Islamabad and surrounding areas, cold and partly cloudy conditions are expected, with temperatures dropping during the morning and evening.

Across Punjab, the weather will remain cold and partly cloudy. Light rain is anticipated in Murree, Galiyat, and nearby areas, while cities such as Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Multan are likely to experience smog. Moderate to dense fog is expected during early morning and late evening hours.

Most districts of Sindh will remain dry, though cold conditions will prevail during the morning and night. Light fog is expected in areas including Sukkur, Shikarpur, and Larkana.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, cold and partly cloudy weather will dominate most districts. Rain and light snowfall are likely in mountainous regions such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan, while fog may affect Peshawar, Mardan, and surrounding areas, particularly during morning and nighttime hours.

Balochistan is expected to experience cold and partly cloudy weather across most districts, with extremely cold conditions forecast for northern areas during early morning and evening.

In Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, cold and partly cloudy weather is predicted, with chances of light rain and snowfall in higher elevations.

As the westerly system continues to move through northern and western Pakistan, the NDMA has emphasized the need for heightened preparedness, especially for individuals traveling in affected regions. The authority warned that dense fog may significantly reduce visibility, increasing the risk of travel disruptions.

PRECAUTIONS AND SAFETY MEASURES

The NDMA has advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay updated with the latest weather information, ensure proper insulation of homes, and take necessary precautions against extreme cold—particularly in northern and mountainous regions where temperatures are expected to drop sharply.

Travelers have been urged to monitor road conditions before departure and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy fog or snowfall to minimize risks.
