What is the Gaza Strip?

However, in 2005, Israel had to relinquish its control over Gaza due to the Intifada. For this reason, Israel removed 9000 Jewish settlers from Gaza and also withdrew the Israeli army.

Palestinian Authority elections were held the following year, and Hamas won the election from Mohammed Abbas’ Fatah group. Control of the city fell to the elected government of Hamas.

But after that, the Palestinian Authority, which is headed by Mahmoud Abbas, did not hold elections again to prevent Hamas from winning again.

Israel, on the other hand, imposed a siege on Gaza after Hamas took control, claiming that this would prevent the supply of weapons to the militants.

Israel’s siege has been criticized by the United Nations and other human rights groups as de facto Israeli occupation.

Who lives in Gaza?
