US introduces bill calling to end security assistance to Pakistan

27 July, 2024 11:26

US Republican Senator Marco Rubio introduced a bill on Friday, seeking restrictions on offering any security assistance to Pakistan for it alleged threats towards India.

The aforementioned bill strongly supports “technology transfers” to India and urges the administration to treat India as “if it were of the same status as US allies such as Japan, Israel, South Korea, and Nato members.”

Moreover, it calls for report on Pakistan’s use of offensive force, including through terrorism and proxy group against India.

He also proposed to strengthen the US-India partnership to counter China’s influence.

The bill aims to provide support to India in its response to growing threats to its territorial integrity and provide necessary security assistance.

He also suggests providing a limited exemption for India from Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions.

The CAATSA law authorises the US administration to impose sanctions on countries that purchase major defence hardware from Russia.

If approved, it would allow India to purchase military equipment from Russia without having to face US sanctions.

This legislation could have significant implications for Pakistan, particularly at a time when Islamabad and Washington are working to strengthen their bilateral relationship.

Although the bill is unlikely to advance in the current Congress, which is ending its session this year, it may be reintroduced in the next Congress.
