South Korea’s president declares emergency martial law amid political crisis

03 December, 2024 19:47

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an emergency martial law on Tuesday, accusing the opposition of anti-state activities that threaten the country’s stability.

In a televised address, Yoon stated that the measure was necessary to safeguard South Korea’s democracy and counter the perceived threats from North Korea’s communist forces.

“To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements… I hereby declare emergency martial law,” Yoon said.

The announcement has sparked controversy, with Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling conservative People Power Party, strongly opposing the declaration.

Han labeled the martial law as a “wrong decision” and vowed to resist it alongside the public.

In response, the liberal opposition Democratic Party called for an emergency meeting to discuss the implications of the declaration, signaling further political tensions.

The situation in South Korea has grown increasingly tense as President Yoon has faced challenges in advancing his agenda, including a deadlock with the opposition over the upcoming budget bill and controversy surrounding allegations against his administration.
