Long-awaited Gaza ceasefire begins

19 January, 2025 10:07

A long-awaited ceasefire has begun in Gaza after a three-hour delay.

The ceasefire was expected to start at 8:30 a.m. (1.30 a.m. ET) but Israel waited until Hamas handed over the hostages list due to be released Sunday.

According to Arab media, the Israeli army has started withdrawing from Rafah city in southern Gaza, the troops will remain along the Philadelphia Corridor along the Egyptian border.

Handcuffed Palestinian children wait to return to their damaged homes with their belongings. Before the ceasefire, 122 Palestinians, including 33 children, were killed in Israeli attacks.

Israel has destroyed the settlements of Gaza with barbaric bombardment, houses, schools, colleges and hospitals have become ruins.

The Israeli prime minister has warned that the ceasefire process will not start until he receives the list of hostages from Hanas, and if the second phase is unsuccessful, the war will start again.

On the other hand, far-right Israeli minister Ben Gower, who opposes the ceasefire with Hamas, resigned from his post.

It should be noted that 47,899 Palestinians, including thousands of children and women, were martyred in the fifteen-month Israeli war on Gaza, while more than 100,000 Palestinians are injured and thousands are missing.
