Doomsday Clock moves 1 second closer to catastrophe
The Doomsday Clock that symbolises how near humanity is to end has been moved 1 second forward to 89 seconds to midnight.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) said that the potential misuses of advances in biology, nuclear threats and artificial intelligence, as well as climate change, were the key factors.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) sets the clock annually.
BAS chair Daniel Holz has said the latest move was a warning to all world leaders.
Earlier in 1947, the clock was originally placed at seven minutes to midnight. Last year, the Doomsday Clock was left unchanged at 90 seconds.
The Chicago-based non-profit organisation BAS, in a statement, said that in setting the clock one second closer to midnight, we send a stark signal.
The statement added that because the world is already perilously close to the precipice, a move of even a single second should be taken as an indication of extreme danger.
BAS warned the continuing war in Ukraine may turn nuclear at any point because of a rash decision or through accident or miscalculation.
