US President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Indian-origin scholar S Paul Kapoor as his Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.
Who is S. Paul Kapur?
According to the report, his nomination has come at a time when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Washington. In this backdrop, the appointment of S. Paul Kapoor indicates a major change in America’s policy towards South Asia and there may be a possible hardening in US policy towards Pakistan.
Like others already in the administration, S. Paul Kapur is a strong supporter of the US-India partnership and a strong critic of Pakistan, according to analysts who closely monitor South Asian affairs.
If confirmed by the Senate, S. Paul Kapur will replace Donald Lu, who is currently serving as a senior official in South and Central Asia.
