Afghan Taliban’s border provocations escalate tensions with Pakistan
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated once again as heavy firing continues along the Torkham-Jalalabad border.
According to security sources, the clashes erupted due to the Afghan Interim Government’s (IAG) construction activities in a disputed area near the border. Pakistan had previously warned Afghanistan against unilateral construction efforts, urging negotiations to resolve the issue. However, reports indicate that the Afghan forces continued with their activities, leading to an exchange of fire.
Pakistan has consistently raised concerns about the presence of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan, accusing the Taliban-led government of providing sanctuary to militants involved in cross-border attacks. Islamabad maintains that its recent counter-terrorism operations have successfully dismantled several TTP hideouts, prompting backlash from the Afghan side.
Analysts believe that these border tensions stem from deeper security challenges, with Pakistan determined to curb militant activities originating from Afghan soil.
The Taliban administration, however, has denied allegations of supporting terrorism and instead called for dialogue to de-escalate tensions.
Regional experts warn that repeated border skirmishes not only threaten bilateral relations but also pose risks to regional stability. Calls for diplomatic engagement have grown, with international stakeholders urging both sides to resolve disputes through negotiations rather than military confrontations.
As the situation remains volatile, security forces on both sides are on high alert, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
