A powerful earthquake struck Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday afternoon, causing significant destruction in the city.
Videos from the scene show a building under construction completely collapsing, with at least one confirmed death and 50 individuals injured. The earthquake, which struck at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time (2:30 a.m. ET), had its epicenter located in Myanmar, about 800 miles away from Bangkok. Despite the distance, the quake’s impact was heavily felt in the Thai capital, a city with over 11 million residents.
In Myanmar, videos also depict severe damage, including crumpled shops and homes. The earthquake registered a 7.7 magnitude on the Richter Scale and has left widespread devastation in its wake.
