What is UAE’s new digital ID system replacing Emirates ID cards?

17 April, 2025 14:16

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is moving forward with its digital transformation plans. Soon, people may no longer need to carry a physical Emirates ID to access services like healthcare, banking, and telecom.

The government is planning to launch a new digital ID system within a year. The digital ID will use facial biometrics recognition and identity verification will make it easier and quicker for citizens and residents to use services.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has already introduced the e-Emirates ID, which is being accepted in several sectors.

The issue was raised during a recent Federal National Council (FNC) meeting, when a member mentioned the concern that people still need to present their physical ID, particularly in hospitals. He called on the government to upgrade and modernize the identity verification system.

In response, Minister Abdul Rahman Al Owais said that the e-ID is already being used in many areas and will be expanded further. The new system will be supported by the UAEPASS app.

According to reports, the digital system may be challenged particularly around identity checks but the government will work with partners to test and improve it. There will also be calls for all sectors to adopt this biometric-based digital ID system in the future.
