Record 3,521% Tariffs: US Targets Asian Solar Imports

22 April, 2025 11:47

The U.S. government plans to put very high taxes on solar panels from four Asian countries. The taxes could be as much as 3,521%. This affects solar panels coming from Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

The U.S. Commerce Department has been investigating for one year. They say Chinese companies are cheating. These companies get money from the Chinese government to make solar panels very cheap. Then they sell them in the U.S. at low prices. This hurts American solar panel makers.

Several big U.S. solar companies asked for help last year. They said they could not compete with the cheap Asian imports. Now, the U.S. government is taking action.

The new taxes are different for each country and company:

  • Cambodia: Some companies face a 3,521% tax. This is because they did not help with the investigation.

  • Thailand: Trina Solar, a Chinese company, will pay 375% tax on panels made there.

  • Malaysia: Jinko Solar, another Chinese company, has a lower tax of about 41%.

  • Vietnam: Taxes will vary by company.

These taxes will be added to existing taxes from the Trump administration.

Another U.S. agency, the International Trade Commission (ITC), will make the final decision. They will vote in June. If they agree, the new taxes will start soon after.

American solar companies are happy. The American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee asked for this investigation.

Tim Brightbill, a lawyer for the group, said: “This is a big win for U.S. factories. It proves Chinese solar companies were breaking the rules.”

Who Will Be Hurt?

In 2023, the U.S. bought $12 billion worth of solar panels from these four countries. With new taxes, these panels will cost much more.

This could cause problems:

  • Good for: U.S. solar manufacturers who can now compete better.

  • Bad for: Businesses and homeowners who want cheap solar panels. Solar projects may become more expensive.

Why This Matters

  1. Trade War: This continues the fight between the U.S. and China over clean energy.

  2. Jobs: It could help American solar factories grow.

  3. Green Energy: Higher costs might slow down solar power growth in the U.S.

The U.S. wants to make more solar panels at home. But right now, most come from Asia. These taxes are meant to change that.
