Russian attack on Kyiv Kills 9, injures dozens
A major missile and drone attack by Russia hit the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight, killing at least nine people and injuring 63 others, including six children, according to officials.
The strikes, which happened around 1 am, targeted several neighborhoods and caused serious damage to homes. Ukraine’s emergency services said 42 people were taken to the hospital, and rescue teams are still searching through the rubble for more victims.
The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. Fires broke out in many buildings, especially in the Sviatoshynskyi district, where a residential building caught fire.
Footage showed rescue workers pulling survivors from collapsed buildings and removing the dead. One of the survivors, a student named Oksana Bilozir, said she was injured in the head by falling debris after explosions destroyed parts of her home. She was preparing to run to a shelter when her walls collapsed and the lights went out.
This deadly attack came just hours after peace talks stalled again. Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not agreeing to give up Crimea to Russia as part of a peace deal. However, Zelensky has said many times that he will never accept giving up Ukrainian land.
One Kyiv resident, Anastasiia Zhuravlova, a mother of two, said her family ran to a basement shelter after explosions shattered windows and sent kitchen appliances flying through their home. She said they were scared and had no choice but to leave their damaged house for safety.
More fires and destruction were also reported in other districts, including Shevchenkivsky and Holosiivskyi, as the city deals with the aftermath of one of the most serious attacks in recent months.
