Putin pushing Russian troops into deadlier advances during negotiations

Vladimir Putin Open to Talks with Zelensky After Expert-Level Preparations, Says Kremlin
Russia is continuing its attacks on Ukraine, but it’s paying a high price. A US-based think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), says Russian forces are losing more soldiers than before while gaining less ground. So far in 2025, Russia has lost about 99 soldiers for every square kilometer of land taken—compared to 59 last year.
Despite these losses, President Putin is pushing forward, hoping to gain more territory and use it as leverage in possible ceasefire talks. The ISW believes Putin still wants full control over Ukraine and aims to weaken NATO, even though peace talks are ongoing and supported by the US.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is holding its ground, thanks in part to its strong use of drones. One security expert told Newsweek that Ukraine’s front line isn’t about to collapse, even if US support slows down. He said Ukraine is producing its own drones and Europe may step in to help with weapons and intelligence.
However, Ukraine could still suffer if it loses access to key US weapons—like long-range missiles and air defense systems. These tools are critical for defending cities and keeping Russian forces from moving in too close.
Overall, Russia is using more troops, but with fewer results—yet Putin is not backing down. The situation remains intense, with big decisions ahead for both the US. and Ukraine.
