Ankara, May 15 – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Konya, Turkey, on Thursday afternoon (May 15), according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake occurred around 3:46 PM local time and was strongly felt in the capital city, Ankara, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently on an official visit.
No Casualties Reported So Far
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage, but officials are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services remain on alert, and local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious.
Earthquake Shakes Vehicles, Causes Panic
Several videos have surfaced on social media, showing vehicles shaking on roads and people rushing for cover inside shops and boutiques. While some of the footage is believed to be from today’s quake, official confirmation is still pending regarding its authenticity.
Turkey’s Ongoing Earthquake Trauma
The country is still reeling from the catastrophic 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck in February 2023, which killed over 59,000 people in Turkey and 8,000 in Syria.
