In a joint move, the leaders of Britain, Canada, and France have issued a warning to Israel, threatening targeted sanctions if it does not halt its renewed military campaign in Gaza and remove restrictions on humanitarian aid. The coordinated stance increases international pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as concern mounts over the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Israeli military launched a new operation on Friday, with Netanyahu asserting Israel’s intention to take full control of Gaza. Experts have warned of an impending famine as the conflict deepens.
“The Israeli Government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law,” the three countries said in a joint statement released by the British government. “We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank … We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions.”
Responding strongly, Netanyahu accused the leaders of London, Ottawa, and Paris of rewarding the October 7 attack on Israel. “the leaders in London, Ottawa and Paris are offering a huge prize for the genocidal attack on Israel on October 7 while inviting more such atrocities,” he stated. He reaffirmed Israel’s resolve to continue its military campaign until its objectives—hostage release and Gaza’s demilitarization—are achieved.
Israel has blocked aid including food, fuel, and medicine since March to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages taken during the October 7 attack, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 others kidnapped.
“We have always supported Israel’s right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate” the three nations said. They emphasized they would not tolerate “these egregious actions” and voiced support for ceasefire efforts led by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt. They also reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and the recognition of a Palestinian state.
Hamas praised the statement, calling it “an important step” toward upholding international law. Meanwhile, the ongoing Israeli air and ground offensive has devastated Gaza, displacing nearly the entire population and leaving more than 53,000 people dead, according to Gaza health officials.
