Death Toll Mounts in Gaza Amid Intense Israeli Bombardment

24 May, 2025 17:05

Israeli airstrikes have significantly intensified across Gaza since early Friday, claiming the lives of at least 76 Palestinians and injuring dozens more, with Jabalia in northern Gaza experiencing one of the deadliest assaults yet, according to international media reports.

Eyewitnesses described the Jabalia attack as “catastrophic,” as entire families lost their homes. Up to 50 people were reported dead or missing. A survivor told Al Jazeera, “Israeli forces are doing recreational killings of the civilians,” highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the strike.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres labeled the current violence as “the cruelest phase of this brutal war.” He strongly criticized Israel for insufficient humanitarian aid. “The north of Gaza is under complete siege. Aid is being trickled in with a teaspoon while famine tightens its grip,” he said, calling for urgent international action.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported that the death toll has now reached at least 53,822, with more than 122,382 people injured. However, Gaza’s government media office asserts the actual death toll has surpassed 61,700, with many still buried under rubble.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, after a surprise Hamas attack killed 1,139 Israelis and over 200 hostages were taken. Israel’s subsequent military response has drawn widespread international criticism.

Despite growing global appeals for a ceasefire and humanitarian access, the crisis deepens. Gaza’s population continues to suffer daily bombings, food shortages, and disease outbreaks, as their calls for relief and justice grow louder on the world stage.
