Saudi Arabia lifts 73-year alcohol ban for tourists

26 May, 2025 23:16

Saudi Arabia is planning to lift its 73-year-old ban on alcohol by 2026, allowing limited consumption in about 600 designated tourist zones. This major policy shift is part of the country’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil.

According to reports from Travel and Tour World and regional tourism sources, alcohol will be permitted only in select high-end locations such as five-star hotels, licensed resorts, and designated tourism areas. Access will be strictly regulated, and the offerings will be limited to wine and beer. Alcohol will not be available in public areas or to Saudi citizens, maintaining cultural and religious boundaries.

This change marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to open up to international tourism and modernize its image. The move is also seen as preparation for hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2034, as the country works to make itself more welcoming to global visitors.

Vision 2030, launched in 2016 under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is a national strategy to expand sectors like tourism, entertainment, technology, and renewable energy. One of its major goals is to attract 100 million tourists annually by the end of the decade and to rank among the world’s top five travel destinations.

The new alcohol policy reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to ease certain social restrictions and promote itself as a modern, global destination while balancing tradition with economic growth.
