Saudi Arabia Refutes Media Reports on Alcohol Licensing Plans

26 May, 2025 21:00

Recent international media reports suggesting that Saudi Arabia will allow alcohol sales starting in 2026 have been categorically denied by Saudi sources. According to informed officials, “these claims lack any official confirmation from relevant authorities and do not reflect existing policies or regulations in Saudi Arabia.”

Speaking to Arab News, the sources emphasized that the Kingdom remains dedicated to offering an authentic and culturally immersive tourism experience in line with its broader development goals. This strategy, they said, has been warmly received by international visitors who are drawn to the country’s rich heritage and scenic diversity.

Addressing speculation about alcohol regulations for non-Muslim diplomats, officials explained that a new system has been introduced to ensure the responsible handling of diplomatic shipments. Under these updated rules, embassies representing non-Muslim countries will no longer be allowed to include alcohol and specific restricted items in their diplomatic cargo. However, “controlled access to such goods remains possible under strict regulatory guidelines to prevent misuse.”

The sources also pointed to the notable progress of Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry. In 2024, the Kingdom hosted 29.7 million international visitors, an 8% increase from 2023. Total tourism spending soared to 283.8 billion SAR, with foreign tourists contributing 168.5 billion SAR, highlighting the sector’s growing importance to the national economy.
