Kremlin confirmed a Ukrainian attack on the Kerch Bridge

04 June, 2025 15:38

The Kremlin has confirmed that a Ukrainian attack targeted the Kerch Bridge connecting Russia to Crimea, but insists the bridge is still working.

On June 3, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it had carried out a special operation against the bridge. Officials said underwater mines were used to damage the bridge’s underwater supports. The attack was followed by naval drone strikes.

The bridge is important because it connects mainland Russia to Crimea, a region annexed by Russia in 2014 and claimed by Ukraine. This is the third attack on the bridge since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

What Happened?

Ukraine said it successfully hit the bridge’s structure, causing serious disruption.

A source in the SBU told reporters that the bridge was “put out of order” by their explosives. However, Russia denied this, claiming the bridge is still in use.

“There was indeed an explosion,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing on June 4, according to Meduza. “Nothing was damaged. The bridge is operational.”

Russia’s Response

Peskov accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure. He said Russia is taking security steps to defend against future attacks.

“The Kyiv regime continues to try to hit civilian sites,” Peskov stated. “Russia is taking the needed precautions based on the known behavior of the Ukrainian side.”

Background

The Crimean Bridge, also called the Kerch Bridge, carries cars and trains between Russia and Crimea. It is seen as a symbol of Russia’s control over the region.

Previous attacks in October 2022 and July 2023 caused serious damage and temporary closures. Ukraine has always said the bridge is a military target.

What’s Next?

This is a breaking story, and more updates are expected soon. Both Russian and Ukrainian officials may release new information.

Observers are watching closely to see if this attack will impact military movements or lead to more strikes in the area.
