The aircraft was en route to London Gatwick and was carrying 242 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
The flight took off at 1:38 PM from Runway 23. It issued a distress call shortly after takeoff, alerting air traffic control to a technical problem. Within minutes, the plane lost contact and crashed into the densely populated Meghani Nagar area, sending thick black smoke into the air and sparking panic across the city.

Technical Failure Suspected
Sources from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) say the aircraft issued a ‘MAYDAY’ call before crashing. It is suspected that the plane suffered a major technical malfunction shortly after takeoff. “The aircraft lost contact moments after sending the distress signal. It crashed outside the airport perimeter,” a DGCA official said.
Ongoing Rescue and Investigation
Rescue teams, firefighters, and ambulances rushed to the crash site in Meghani Nagar. The damage in the area is severe, and early reports suggest over 100 casualties. Emergency teams are still working to recover victims and provide medical aid to survivors.
Air India confirmed the incident on social media, stating: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
The flight was also operating under codeshare SQ4939 with Singapore Airlines.
