Iran presses UN Secretary-General for action against Israel

14 June, 2025 18:21

Iran has urgently called on the United Nations to intervene following what it describes as “flagrant violations of sovereignty” by Israel, after a series of devastating airstrikes hit military installations, nuclear facilities, and civilian areas in and around Tehran. The attacks, among the most direct Israeli operations on Iranian soil in decades, killed two of Iran’s most senior military leaders and triggered an immediate retaliatory missile barrage toward Israel.

Iran’s Urgent Appeal to the UN

In a high-stakes phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes as a “blatant act of aggression” and demanded accountability.

Key points from Araghchi’s statement:

  • “These attacks are a grave violation of international law and the UN Charter.”
  • *”The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.”*
  • Called for UN condemnation and diplomatic measures against Israel.

Guterres reportedly expressed “sorrow and condemnation” over the escalation and pledged to use “all diplomatic channels” to de-escalate tensions.

The Israeli Strikes: A Dangerous Escalation

The late-night Friday attacks struck multiple high-profile targets, including:

  • Military command centers
  • Nuclear research facilities
  • Residential buildings in eastern Tehran
Casualties included:
  • Major General Mohammad Bagheri (Chairman, Iranian Armed Forces General Staff)

  • Major General Hossein Salami (IRGC Commander)

Iran’s Retaliation & Regional Fallout

Within hours, Iran launched Operation True Promise III, firing ballistic missiles and drones at Israel. While Israeli defenses intercepted most, debris caused damage near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s Warning:
“The Zionist regime has written its own painful fate. Iran will respond — decisively and without delay.”

Global Alarm Over Spiral Toward War

The exchange has triggered international panic, with fears of a broader Middle East conflict. World leaders are scrambling to restrain both nations, but the situation remains volatile.
