Iran’s Parliament Approves Strait of Hormuz Closure Amid US Tensions

Strait of Hormuz Closure Amid
Iran’s Parliament, the Majlis, has reportedly approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, according to state media PressTV.
However, the final decision lies with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which will determine whether the key oil route will officially be closed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital oil trade passages, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. According to the US Energy Information Administration, nearly 20% of global petroleum passed through the strait in 2024—a trend that continued into 2025.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged China to intervene diplomatically. “I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil,” he said.
Rubio warned that closing the strait would be a “terrible mistake” and “economic suicide” for Iran. He also noted that while the US has options to respond, the closure would hurt other global economies more than America’s.
