UN Chief Responds to US Strikes on Iran, Calls it ‘Dangerous Escalation’
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced grave concern following recent US strikes on the nuclear facilities of Iran, warning of a “dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge.”
In a strongly worded statement released Saturday, Guterres condemned the use of force by the United States, highlighting the risk of further instability.
“I am gravely troubled by the US’s military actions against Iran. The region is now standing at a dangerous crossroads,” Guterres said.
The UN chief stressed the critical need to avoid further confrontation and called on all member states to actively support efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States.
“At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos,” he warned.
Guterres underscored the broader implications of the conflict, stating that the current trajectory poses a serious threat to civilians, regional stability, and global security.
“There is no military solution to this conflict,” he stated firmly. “The only path forward is through diplomacy. Peace is our only hope.”
Calling for restraint over retaliation, Guterres reiterated that diplomacy must be the guiding principle for all parties involved.
“Restraint, not retaliation, must guide the global response,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of preventing further chaos.
