Washington: US President Donald Trump has voiced optimism that a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached as early as next week.
Speaking at the White House, President Trump stated that negotiations are progressing and a truce appears near. He described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as severe, pointing to widespread food shortages. Trump emphasized that the United States is providing both financial and food assistance, without support from other nations.
According to Israeli daily Israel Hayom, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump have reportedly agreed on various key issues, including a plan of ceasefire in Gaza within two weeks.
When questioned about Iran’s nuclear activities, Trump made it clear that he would not rule out military action if intelligence reports show Iran enriching uranium to concerning levels. He stated that any threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program would prompt serious consideration of further strikes on its facilities.
Trump also called for inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or another credible organization to examine the nuclear sites targeted by US airstrikes last week.
In response to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s recent statement—claiming that Iran’s strike on a U.S. base in Qatar was a blow to American prestige—Trump said he would issue a reply soon.
The president also claimed credit for facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, commending both governments and expressing satisfaction with the resolution. Highlighting the nuclear capabilities of both countries, Trump noted that the dispute was resolved through trade diplomacy.
Reflecting on the risks of his position, Trump remarked that being president is far more dangerous than it appears. He recalled an incident in Pennsylvania where a bullet reportedly grazed his ear, saying it served as a stark reminder of the risks involved. He humorously added that had he known the job carried a 5% chance of death—higher than that of bull riders or racecar drivers—he might have reconsidered running for office.
Trump also expressed hope for soon resolving tensions with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. Meanwhile, he abruptly ended trade talks with Canada, describing negotiations with the country as particularly challenging.
