Justice cannot be suspended by unilateral will, India’s bid to halt the Indus Waters Treaty has failed

28 June, 2025 13:50

The Court of Arbitration (CoA) has delivered a significant verdict in the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) case, marking a major diplomatic and legal win for Pakistan.

In its ruling, the CoA confirmed its authority to hear and decide disputes under the treaty, rejecting India’s argument that it had no jurisdiction.

The court made it clear that no party can suspend or delay the treaty’s legal process through unilateral actions.

India’s attempt to put the treaty in abeyance was firmly rejected, with the court stating that such efforts go against the principles of international law.

This decision strengthens Pakistan’s long-held position and shows its commitment to resolving issues through legal and peaceful means.

India faced a major diplomatic setback as its legal objections were dismissed.

The verdict has exposed the weakness of India’s stance and has isolated it on the international stage.

On the other hand, Pakistan has been praised for respecting treaty commitments and following legal channels.

The ruling also calls on both countries to re-engage in dialogue. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has repeated Pakistan’s readiness to hold talks on all outstanding matters, including water, Kashmir, trade, and terrorism. The international community is now urging India to return to the table for peaceful discussions.

The CoA’s verdict is binding and cannot be appealed, making it a final and enforceable decision. By ignoring the ruling, India risks further damage to its international image. Experts believe this judgment is a reminder that global treaties must be respected and that no country can act above international law. It is hoped that this legal milestone will lead to better cooperation between Pakistan and India and reduce tensions over water resources in the region.
