Trump Says TikTok Buyer Found, Awaits China’s Approval

29 June, 2025 21:36

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump revealed in a Fox News interview on Sunday that a group of “very wealthy people” is ready to buy TikTok. He said the buyers’ identities will be announced in about two weeks.

Trump noted that the deal would likely require approval from Chinese President Xi Jinping, as TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is based in China.

The statement follows a 2024 US law requiring ByteDance to either sell TikTok’s US operations or face a shutdown by January 19. Trump had already extended the deadline three times, with the latest extension pushing the cutoff to September 17.

Earlier plans to spin off TikTok’s US operations into a new American-owned entity were stalled after China opposed the deal due to rising trade tensions.

“We have a buyer for TikTok,” Trump said in the interview. “I think President Xi will probably approve it.”

Trump also acknowledged TikTok’s influence on young voters, saying it helped boost his popularity during the 2024 election.
