Massive Protest in India Against Muslim-Targeted Waqf Amendment Law
Patna, India – Thousands of people staged a strong protest against the controversial Waqf Amendment Law in the city of Patna. The demonstration was led by the Muslim organization Imarat-e-Sharia, with participation from numerous Indian politicians, Members of Parliament (MPs), and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Bihar Assembly Opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav and Lok Sabha member Pappu Yadav played leading roles in the protest against Waqf Law. Both the public and opposition parties have sharply condemned the Modi government’s undemocratic and sectarian measures.
Tejashwi Yadav stated, “The opposition has strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill in both houses.” He warned the Modi government, “Those currently in power will soon be finished.” Emphasizing continued resistance, he added, “Whether in the assembly, court, or on the streets, the fight against the Waqf law will continue on every front.” He further declared, “When a government of the poor comes, this oppressive law will be thrown in the dustbin.”
Tejashwi Yadav accused the Modi government of conspiring to remove poor, Dalit, and minority names from voter lists to deprive them of their voting rights. He also claimed that the extremist government plans to remove these groups’ names from pension lists following the voter lists.
Pappu Yadav echoed these concerns, stating that the BJP aims to snatch the votes of 47 million poor and minority voters to secure victory in the Bihar elections.
Maulana Faisal Rahmani condemned the amendments as “a conspiracy to seize our places of worship and heritage.”
The opposition argues that the amendments to the Waqf Act are designed to exclude millions of Muslims and lower-caste Hindus from the electoral process. They assert that the Modi government, rooted in Hindutva ideology, has repeatedly demonstrated anti-Muslim sentiments.
This move is seen as a continuation of previous government actions such as the NRC and the triple talaq ban, all targeting Muslim communities. Critics argue that the attack on Sharia law affects not only Muslims but all backward classes and minorities across India.
They further claim that the BJP government neither supports democracy nor the people, but operates as an openly Muslim-hostile party. These actions, they say, reflect the Hindutva ideology and are intensifying communal tensions within the country.
