Brazil has halted discussions to buy Indiaβs Akash surface-to-air missile system, instead shifting its focus to a European alternative from defense firm MBDA. The decision is being seen as a setback for Indiaβs defense diplomacy, especially after high-level political efforts to promote the Akash system abroad.
MBDAβs CAMM-ER Wins Over Akash
Initially, the Brazilian Air Force had shown interest in Indiaβs Akash missile, developed by the DRDO. But the South American nation is now leaning toward the Enhanced Modular Air Defence Solutions (EMADS) from MBDA, which includes the CAMM-ER missile system.
βIndiaβs offer did not include the newer Akash-NGβ
One major reason behind Brazilβs decision is the limited range of the Akash missile β 25 to 30 kilometers β compared to the CAMM-ERβs 45 kilometers. Additionally, Indiaβs Akash-NG, the next-gen version, is still under development and has not yet been proven in combat. Brazilian analysts expressed concerns that βIndiaβs offer did not include the newer Akash-NG.β
European System Offers Proven Technology
MBDAβs CAMM-ER system is already deployed in countries like the UK, Italy, and Poland. It features 360-degree coverage, soft vertical launch technology, and advanced radar capabilities. Sources told The Economic Times that uncertainty over delivery timelines and technological limitations tipped the scales in favor of MBDA.
$920 Million Package Offers Full System
The European deal, reportedly worth around $920 million (5 billion Brazilian reals), includes launchers, missiles, radars, and command systems. It provides Brazil with a full-scale medium-range air defense system β something Akash could not match at this stage.
Setback Despite Political Push
This decision comes despite efforts from Indian leadership. During the G20 summit in September 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz InΓ‘cio Lula da Silva agreed to deepen defense ties. But those talks did not translate into the Akash deal, which Indian defense circles now see as a missed opportunity.
Indiaβs Defense Export Ambitions Hit a Bump
India has been working to promote Akash to countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Argentina as part of its broader goal to become a top defense exporter. But Brazilβs reversal could influence other potential buyers unless India accelerates Akash-NG and improves delivery timelines.
βA wake-up call for Indiaβs export strategyβ
Experts say this development is βa wake-up call for Indiaβs export strategy.β Political goodwill may no longer be enough β international buyers now expect cutting-edge, tested systems that can compete with Western offerings.
