Prejudice Against Bengali Muslims in India Reaches New Heights Under BJP Government
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule, state oppression in India has intensified, with conspiracies targeting Muslims based on the Hindutva ideology becoming increasingly evident. Bengali Muslims, in particular, have become prime targets amid this environment of religious and ethnic discrimination.
Following the decline of Indian-backed former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s influence, the BJP government has turned its focus on Bengali Muslims living in India. The Modi administration, together with pro-government media outlets, is reportedly engaged in efforts to politically and economically marginalize Bengali Muslims residing in the country.
According to the Indian news platform Scroll, Bengali Muslim laborers are being illegally detained and labeled as suspicious foreigners. On June 26, two Muslim families in Delhi were forcibly deported to Bangladesh despite possessing valid identification documents.
Multiple Bengali laborers have had their identification papers and land ownership proofs dismissed, resulting in their eviction. On June 30, in Odisha, 36 laborers were detained for six days in camps solely for speaking the Bengali language. After the Pulwama attack, the BJP-led government increased ethnic discrimination and detentions targeting Bengali Muslims.
In related developments, the Bangladeshi organization “Roamer Scanner” recently exposed a conspiracy by Indian media to conceal facts in the Sohag murder case. The pro-government media intentionally portrayed the Muslim victim as Hindu to incite religious hatred. This false propaganda is seen as an attempt to fuel social and religious tensions in Bangladesh. The Modi government is allegedly using these sectarian divisions as a pretext to justify political interference in Bangladesh.
