China Seeks to Deepen Cooperation with US at Trade Talks
China announced on Wednesday its intention to “strengthen cooperation” with the United States during trade talks scheduled for next week in Stockholm.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Tuesday that he will meet with Chinese officials in Stockholm next week to discuss tariffs. He also indicated to Fox Business that this third round of high-level talks will likely result in a delay of the mid-August deadline for tariffs to revert to higher levels.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun expressed hopes that the two countries could engage “on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit.”
“We will enhance consensus, reduce misunderstandings, strengthen cooperation and promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of Sino-U.S. relations,” Guo said.
China’s vice premier He Lifeng is scheduled to attend the talks, with a commerce ministry spokesperson confirming on Wednesday that “He Lifeng will go to Sweden from July 27 to 30” for the negotiations.
In May, top officials from both countries met in Geneva and agreed to a temporary reduction in tariffs, an arrangement set to expire next month. Delegations from the U.S. and China also held discussions in London in June.
